“GOD MUST BE CRAZY….TO LOVE US SO MUCH”
Romans 3:19-28

Because of what we have done wrong.
The Law truly shows us who we are and condemns us

Therefore, how can I be saved?

Because the Gospel flies in the face of logic
Righteousness
From God
God’s own righteousness

Righteousness is given from and by Jesus Christ for Verse 21

Because He is crazy in love with us.
God acted decisively in the person of Jesus Christ. Verse 22
Righteousness revealed through faith in Christ. Verses 21-22

God’s character-acting righteously in Christ. Verse 25

IMMANUEL LUTHERAN CHURCH & SCHOOL
Reformation Sunday
October 25, 2015

(Luther’s German Mass – Adapted)
Luther’s German Mass of 1526 was a response to the Lutheran leadership of the time to bring some continuity to worship. Many Pastors were writing their own services which in many cases were poorly done. The choral service we are using this morning for Reformation Sunday follows the tradition of Luther’s German Mass of 1526, in which parts of the liturgy are replaced with hymns.
The Reformation was a movement in the 16th century led by a pious monk named Martin Luther to correct unbiblical teaching and practice in the church of that day. It’s effects were not only positive and beneficial to the church, they were also beneficial to society as well. Many of the historical movements, both of the church and the state, towards ‘freedom and liberty’ have their roots in the Reformation of Martin Luther.
Grace alone, faith alone, through the Scripture alone! This was Luther’s cry to the world that day. It is what we celebrate and hold dear as well. A blessed Reformation Sunday to you all!

THE CONFESSION OF SIN
P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God, our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.
P: Our help is in the name of the Lord.
C: Who made heaven and earth.
P: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord.
C: And You forgave the iniquity of my sin.
P: O almighty God, merciful father,

All: I, a poor miserable sinner, confess to you all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended you and justly deserve your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them, and sincerely repent of them and I pray you of your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of your beloved son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor sinful being.

THE WORD OF ABSOLUTION
P: Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.

THE GLORIA IN EXCELSIS – #947 – “All Glory Be to God on High”

P: Let us pray the collect of the day together:
ALL: O God, Your divine wisdom sets in order all things in heaven and on earth. Put away from us all things hurtful and give us those things that are beneficial for us; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

THE FIRST READING – Revelations 14:6-7
6 Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people.
7 And he said with a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come, and worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water.”

P: This is the Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.

THE EPISTLE –Romans 3:19-28
19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God.
20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight be observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.
21 But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify.
22 This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.
25 God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished 26 he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.
27 Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On that of observing the law? No, but on that of faith.
28 For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law.
P: This is the Word of the Lord
C: Thanks be to God.

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

THE GOSPEL CROSS PROCESSION

THE GRADUAL HYMN–
Congregation #733 “O God, Our Help in Ages Past” Verses 1, 5 and 6

P: The Holy Gospel is written in the 8th chapter of St John, beginning at the 31st verse.
C: Glory be to you, O Lord!
31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
33 They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?”
34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.
35 The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

P: This is the Gospel of our Lord
C: Praise be to you, O Christ!
